Levin Marks Abortion Provider Appreciation Day with Local Providers, Activists
March 10, 2022
STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – Today, Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township), member of the Pro-Choice Caucus and author of the House Resolution recognizing Abortion Provider Appreciation Day, marked the occasion at Northland Family Planning’s Sterling Heights location. He met with staff, providers and advocacy groups working to advance the Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative.
Northland Family Planning was founded by Renee Chelian. Alongside her daughter Lara, Renee and the Northland team have advocated tirelessly for reproductive health care despite antiabortion extremist attacks that have made headlines locally and nationally. Together, they created Reclaim, a nonprofit engaging in advocacy and public education to provide accurate and thoughtful information on reproductive health.
Congressman Levin has been a strong proponent of Reproductive Freedom for All, a ballot proposal that would affirm Michiganders’ fundamental right to reproductive freedom and protect providers by prohibiting punishment for providing safe reproductive health care, including abortions. Fems for Democracy circulated petitions at the event.
“As abortion bans and restrictions continue to sweep the nation, it is important now more than ever that we come together and show solidarity with abortion providers and staff who do invaluable work for our communities,” said Congressman Levin. “At the same time, we must do everything we can to ensure that the right to choose is protected, even as the Supreme Court fails to do so. I’m so grateful for providers like Northland Family Planning, and resilient advocates like Fems for Democracy, ACLU of Michigan, MI Voices, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and other allies who are pushing to see the Reproductive Freedom for All proposal passed this fall.”
“Thank you to Rep. Levin for introducing the Abortion Provider Appreciation Day resolution. We want to thank him for the hard work, strength and leadership that he has shown through these dark times. This is a critical step forward in standing with abortion providers and sharing how we must protect them and reproductive health care. As someone who has worked in abortion care since before Roe v. Wade, I know first hand the harassment and threats abortion providers face on a regular basis,” said Renee Chelian, Northland Family Planning Center Founder and Executive Director. “The staff at Northland Family Planning and at all independent clinics are resilient, innovative, and adaptive. We show up every day to provide abortion care with dignity and respect and work towards a world where each of us can shape our own futures. We are also proud to have his support and his leadership in the Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative. Passing this initiative is essential to affirming that every Michigan citizen has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, which involves the right to make and carry out decisions without political interference in all matters relating to pregnancy, including abortion.”
“Fems For Democracy stands firmly in support of the Reproductive Freedom for All ballot initiative in Michigan. We are DONE compromising and settling for crumbs from politicians and the courts. We thank and support abortion care providers across the state from counsellors to clinicians, administrative staff and volunteers that work tirelessly to support, care for and protect people under relentless pressure of harassment, violence and political attacks,” said Julie Campbell-Bode, Fems for Democracy Chair. “Every Michigander deserves access to healthcare within their own community and we will only stand beside leaders that are willing to support reproductive freedom for all and we thank the leaders that introduced the Abortion Provider Appreciation Day resolution.”
Earlier this week, Congressman Levin introduced his Abortion Provider Appreciation Day Resolution, a bicameral piece of legislation to affirm commitment to abortion providers and staff, and stand against abortion restrictions. He penned the op-ed Pikuach Nefesh and the Jewish commitment to reproductive justice, published in the Hill.
