“Now, when women’s rights are under attack, we need organizers who know how to mobilize and who have the trust of activists on the ground,” — Cecile Richards
ROYAL OAK, MI – Today, former President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, women’s rights and economic justice leader Cecile Richards endorsed Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township) in the race for Michigan’s newly-drawn 11th district.
“Now, when women’s rights are under attack, we need organizers who know how to mobilize and who have the trust of activists on the ground,” said Cecile Richards. “I’ve watched Andy use his office and influence to end the stigma around abortion and to demand real action. It’s crucial we send Andy back to Washington.”
Levin has earned considerable support from reproductive justice advocates locally and nationally. At the beginning of the 117th Congress, Levin called for an end to the filibuster to codify abortion rights and pass other crucial legislation through the Senate and has worked closely with reproductive justice activists throughout his time in Congress.
Following annual meetings with Black Women’s Roundtable Metro Detroit, Levin supported the Reproductive Freedom for All initiative from its beginning stages and earned the support of one of the key organizers, Tameka Ramsey. The petitions have been available at every campaign event and carried by canvassers. Levin’s campaign donated $66,000 to the effort that just reached the threshold of signatures needed to put an initiative on the November ballot codifying abortion and contraceptive health care into Michigan’s state constitution.
After introducing the first ever congressional resolution honoring abortion providers, Levin earned the coveted endorsement of Renee Chelian, founder of Northland Family Planning and national abortion rights leader.
After the leaked opinion foreshadowing that Roe Vs. Wade would be overturned, Heather Booth, the founder of the pre-Roe underground abortion movement Jane Collective endorsed Levin, saying, “Andy Levin is a bold organizer at a moment when this country needs change from the bottom up: for reproductive justice, for climate action, for a 21st-century labor movement.”
On the day that Roe was overturned, Levin sent a strong statement against the ruling that morning, protested outside the Supreme Court and on the streets of Ferndale, and finally, played a crucial role in pushing the largest health system in Michigan to continue to provide abortion care. After learning Beaumont-Spectrum told physicians to no longer provide abortion care, Congressman Levin spoke with the President & CEO of BHSH System and privately and publicly called on them to reverse course and not circumvent Michigan Courts that stopped an abortion ban from going into effect. That same weekend, BHSH System did just that.
Levin also has the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Pramila Jayapal.
