American Federation of Teachers Michigan Endorses Levin

June 15, 2022

ROYAL OAK, MI – Today, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Michigan endorsed former union organizer Congressman Andy Levin (D-Bloomfield Township) in the race for Michigan’s newly-drawn 11th District. The endorsement of AFT Michigan, an AFL-CIO affiliate, comes at a critical point in the incumbent-vs-incumbent Democratic primary, with just under two months until the August 2nd election and with early voting beginning in the coming days.

“A proud product of the Berkley public schools, raising my kids in the Birmingham public schools, it is an incredible honor to receive this endorsement in Michigan’s new 11th District,” said Levin, member of the House Education and Labor Committee. “In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, political upheavals in curriculum and reckonings about the safety of our classrooms, our students, parents, educators, and educational staff from k-12 to higher education and beyond deserve a steadfast champion in Washington guided by the collective voice and power of working people.”

“Every day, AFT Michigan knows that Andy Levin fights not only for respectable pay and, well-funded and safe public schools and college campuses — but that he is a leading voice for the labor movement in the halls of Congress,” said David Hecker, AFT Michigan President. “In the midst of record-high wealth and income inequality and a student loan debt crisis, Andy Levin wants every person – regardless of zip code – to have a high-quality public education. He wrote the bill to make community college tuition0free and supports canceling $50,000 in student debt. This year, AFT was proud to endorse Andy Levin’s Protect Children Through Safe Gun Ownership Act to give schools the resources they need to educate parents and students about safe storage. Our members are ready to take action, get Andy reelected and finish the work we started.”
