The International Brotherhood of Teamsters endorsed Andy Levin for Congress today, saying Levin is the fighter that working families need in Congress.
“Andy Levin has been fighting and winning battles for working people for decades,” said Kevin Moore, President of Teamsters Local 299 and International Teamsters Trustee. “We trust Andy to shake things up in Congress and be a strong advocate for policies that help rebuild the middle class.”
Levin is a lifelong progressive Democrat, a nationally-known union organizer, government leader and now clean energy entrepreneur. As Assistant Director of Organizing at the AFL-CIO, Levin worked closely with union members to protect workers’ freedoms to form unions and bargain collectively.
“Unions are the backbone of the middle class, but they’re under constant attack. We need Andy Levin to help lead a new movement for working people, for better health care, education and good paying jobs,” said Greg Nowak, President of Teamsters Joint Council 43. “We know Andy will fight for those things for us – for all of us.”
Levin said he’s proud and humbled to be endorsed by the Teamsters, which represents 1.4 million hardworking men and women throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
“The Teamsters have done so much to help build the middle class over the past 100 years, but we’re seeing that work eroded every day by Republicans in Congress – to the detriment of our families, our communities and our local economies,” Levin said. “Together we will rebuild the middle class and usher in a new era of prosperity that’s accessible to every Michigander, and every American.”
Since announcing his campaign in December, Levin has earned the support of many former and presently elected officials, including: Congressman Dan Kildee, Former Congressman David Bonior, former Congressman Mark Schauer, Former Governor Jennifer Granholm, retired Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, every State Representative in the 9th District, Oakland County Water Resource Commissioner Jim Nash, and many city, township, and school board officials.
Levin has also been endorsed by a dozen regional and national unions representing millions of American workers including the AFGE, Communications Workers of America, International Association of Machinists, International Union of Operating Engineers, Iron Workers, Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, National Nurses United, National Weather Service Employees Organization, Service Employees International Union, SMART, United Auto Workers, UNITE HERE, United Food & Commercial Workers Local 951, and Utility Workers Union of America.
